The following information is provided to clarify the Taylors Doors and Frames definition of terms we use.
When dealing with Taylors Doors and Frames the definitions provided in this Glossary are the terms we use and our standard definitions for these terms.
Architrave
The architrave is the exposed part of the frame which can be seen when the door leaf is in its latched, or closed position. The architrave dimension for standard frames is 38mm and for S2000 or New Generation frame profiles, 50mm.
AS1530.4
Australian Standard titled "Methods for fire tests on building materials, components and structures.". This standard is the Standard refered to in AS1905.1 which outlines the requirements for testing of building materials such as fire resistant doorsets.
AS1905.1
Australian Standard titled "Components for the protection of openings in fire-resistant walls, Fire-resistant-doorsets". The Standard sets the minimum design, installation and certification requirements for fire resistant doors.
Doorset (or Door Set)
A complete assembly comprising;
- the door leaf or leaves including any glazing or other inbuilt features
- the door frame, if any, with its fixings to the wall and, for a sliding doorset, with all guides and their respective fixings to the lintel, wall or sill
- any fixed panel and its associated transom or mullion (including the methods of fixing) which is contained within the door frame; and
- all door hardware
Door Height
The vertical height of the door.
Door Size
The vertical height of a door panel, the horizontal width of a door panel and the cross sectional thickness of the door panel. The dimensions are always stated in the following order;
Height (mm) x Width (mm) x Thickness (mm)
Door Thickness
The cross sectional thickness of the door panel.
Door Width
The horizontal width of a door panel.
Double Rebate
A frame with rebate provisions on both sides of the frame.
Fire Rated
A product that has been tested in accordance with the relevant Codes and Standards and has been independently verified as having the ability to resist the passage of fire for a pre determined period of time.
Fire Resistant Doorset
A doorset, except when varied as permitted by AS 1905.1, that is identical in assembly, construction and installation with a specimen doorset that has been submitted to the fire resistance test, and has fulfilled all the relevant test requirements.
NOTE: Fire-resistant doorsets are commonly referred to as "fire doors".
Fin
A section of frame extending from the rear of the profile and used for fixing into steel channel, timber studs or Hebel block.
Frame Profile
Frame profile is the generic term we use to describe the cross section shape of the frame. read more
FRL (or Fire Resistance Level)
The normal grading period, in minutes, that is determined by subjecting a specimen to the standard time temperature curve regime as set out in AS 1530.4.
An FRL consists of three value being (in order) structural adequacy / integrity / insulation (e.g. ---/60/30). Under the Australian Standards a Fire Resistant Door is not permitted to bear a structural load and as such the first value in the FRL (i.e. "structural adequacy") is always written as either blank (e.g. /60/30) as NA (e.g. NA/60/30) or dashed (e.g. ---/30/30).
Manufacturer
An organization or individual who fabricates frames, the fire door leaves of fire doorsets, or other building products from raw materials.
Mullion
A vertical section of frame dividing a frame opening into two separate openings.
New Generation or S2000
Series 2000 designed by Taylors Doors and Frames for fast installation offering superior strength and clean finishing. Suitable for stud wall applications. Plasterboard sheets slide into the frame.
Opening Height
The overall height of an opening in a wall (Vertical).
Opening Size
The overall height and width of an opening in a wall and the cross sectional thickness of the wall. Always represented as Height (mm) x Width (mm) x Thickness (mm)
Opening Width
The overall width of an opening in a wall (horizontal).
Overall Height
The vertical distance from the floor to the top of the frame architrave.
Overall Width
The horizontal distance from the end of the frame architrave on the left to the end of the frame architrave on the right.
Partition
Frames made by conventional brake press methodologies. It has fins folded as part of the frame profile with an internal dimension from fin to fin equal to the dimension of the wall channel that would be used in securing the frame into the wall. read more
Rebate
The section of a frame accomodating the thickness of a door leaf.
Return
The section of frame that "returns" back to the wall.
Reveal Height
The vertical distance from the floor level to the inside edge of the frame where the door sits into the frame.
Reveal Size
Internal size of a frame to accomodate a door shown as Reveal Height (mm) x Reveal Width (mm).
Reveal Width
The horizontal distance from the inside of the frame on the left where the door sits into the frame to the inside of the frame on the right.

Single Rebate
Stop Height
The section of frame that protrudes into the opening to stop the door from swinging through an opening.
Stop Section
The section of frame between the rebates.
Throat
The distance between the returns of a frame measured in mm. For brick, block and concrete walls if a frame is to be build into the wall during construction the throat dimension will be equal to the wall thickness + a tollerance of 4mm to 5mm. E.G. for a standard 110mm common brick the throat dimension of the frame would be 114mm.

Taylors Joining System. Frames are supplied in a kit form which includes the frame stiles and frame head along with appropriately sized spreader bars. read more
TWFF
Taylors Weld Free Frame is a pressed metal door frame with no welding, an innovation by Taylors Doors and Frames to assist in extending product life and minimising premature corrosion of steel frames. All hardware provisions are secured using self piercing rivets as opposed to the existing norm of welding provisions into place. read more
